ITV and Channel 4 have submitted proposals for high definition services to appear alongside BBC HD on Multiplex B when capacity becomes available on Freeview.
According to Ofcom's reshuffle plans, there are two remaining slots up grabs by prospective HD channels.
ITV1 has proposed a simulcast HD service for ITV1 to air between 6pm and 11pm. This could see up to 84 football matches showing in HD between 2009 and 2010 plus a selection of ITV1 dramas including Lewis, Kingdom and Marple. The remaining hours could be used for more sports coverage, sub let to private or community users, or used to provide an overnight push video on demand HD service.
Channel 4 is proposing to offer the same 24 hour HD service currently available on Sky. In addition, S4C HD would broadcast an HD service in Wales and Teletext would offer a digital teletext/interactive service similar to that found on Freesat. The broadcaster has also expressed a desire for Freeview HD hardware to feature hard drives and Ethernet ports making them compatible with future push on demand VOD services.
